The Story Behind the Porsche Flat-6 Crankshaft Engine Coffee Table

There’s something iconic about a Porsche flat-6 engine. The sound, the symmetry, the performance—it’s a powerplant that deserves to be admired, even when it's no longer powering a car. That’s exactly what inspired this latest build: a one-of-a-kind engine coffee table that celebrates Porsche engineering in all its glory.

Commissioned by a True Enthusiast

Back in October 2024, Ben’s Automotive Decor (B.A.D.) was commissioned to create a custom engine block coffee table using a Porsche flat-6 engine. The goal? To transform this legendary powerplant into a horizontal centerpiece that could double as a wine rack—yes, you read that right. The engine’s horizontally opposed cylinders would hold wine bottles, giving new meaning to the term “boxer engine.”

Finished in a bold Porsche red, the first version of this table came out stunning. But as I tore into the original engine, something else caught my eye.

Crankshaft Beauty, Hidden No More

As I pulled the engine apart—removing the cylinder heads, timing chain, and eventually splitting the engine cases—I was struck by the internal beauty of the crankshaft and rotating assembly. There's something captivating about the symmetrical layout of a flat-6, with pistons opposing each other like a mechanical yin and yang. It's not just engineering—it’s art.

That moment sparked a new idea. What if we celebrated the crankshaft itself as the main feature? Most people will never get to see this side of an engine, let alone up close. So the concept evolved: showcase the rotating assembly as the hero of the build.

A New Design: Crankshaft-Centered, Artfully Executed

To bring the vision to life, we designed a custom steel frame that would cradle the flat-6 crankshaft, allowing every journal, rod, and counterweight to be admired. On either end of the frame, we incorporated waterjet-cut Porsche crests, finished in traditional Porsche colors. These logos don’t just honor the brand—they serve as sculptural windows into the engine’s soul.

On top, we added a racetrack-inspired oval glass tabletop, tempered and beveled for durability and elegance. The shape is a subtle nod to motorsport, while the clarity of the glass invites viewers to peer into the intricate mechanical world below.
